Geckoboard vs Databox: Which One Fits Your Team?

6 min read

Quick verdict: pick Geckoboard if the goal is a clean dashboard on an office TV that a non-technical team can build and forget. Pick Databox if you want many dashboards, goals and reporting across marketing and sales tools, and you'd like to start on a free plan. If your numbers come from your own product rather than SaaS tools, neither is the obvious fit, and a third option at the end of this page probably is.

Both are good products aimed at roughly the same buyer: a business team that wants its KPIs in one place without a developer. They differ in how they price, how deep they go, and what they assume you'll do with the numbers.

Setup: how fast can you get a dashboard live?

Geckoboard is faster for the first screen. You pick a data source, pick a metric, and the widget appears. The editor is deliberately narrow, which is the point: there's not much to get wrong.

Databox asks a little more of you up front, because it does more. You connect sources, then build metrics, goals and dashboards on top of them. The payoff is reuse: one metric can feed several dashboards and reports.

If the brief is "get the support queue on the TV by lunch", Geckoboard wins. If it's "give each of our five teams a dashboard with targets", Databox fits better.

Pricing: what actually drives the bill

The two charge for different things, and that decides which is cheaper for you.

  • Geckoboard charges per dashboard and per editor.* Two dashboards are $79; five are $151; ten with three editors approach the $319 Performance plan. The full table is in our Geckoboard pricing breakdown.
  • Databox charges by data sources and users, with unlimited dashboards on paid plans.* If you pull from a few tools but want lots of views of that data, Databox gets cheaper quickly. If you pull from many tools, its tiers climb.

A rough rule: few dashboards, many sources → Geckoboard. Many dashboards, few sources → Databox.

Mobile

This is the clearest difference. Databox has native iOS and Android apps, and the iOS app also runs on Apple Watch.* Geckoboard has stopped developing its native iOS app and offers a progressive web app instead, and dashboards can't be edited on mobile.*

If people will check numbers from their phones, Databox is the stronger choice of the two.

Data: where each one draws the line

Both are built around connectors. That's what makes them fast for SaaS data, and also where they stop.

  • In Geckoboard, data outside the connectors goes in through spreadsheets or the Datasets API, which means writing and scheduling a job that pushes rows into Geckoboard.*
  • In Databox, you can define custom metrics and bring data in through its API or spreadsheets.*

Either way, data from your own product has to be copied into the vendor's system before it can be shown.

Where each one wins

Geckoboard wins when:

  • The office TV is the main screen, not a nice-to-have.
  • A small, non-technical team will build it once and leave it.
  • You want very little to configure.

Databox wins when:

  • You want many dashboards without paying for each one.
  • Goals, scorecards and recurring reports matter.
  • You're an agency reporting to clients.
  • You want to start free.

A third option: when your data is behind your own API

Both tools assume the data lives in other SaaS products. Plenty of teams, especially software companies, have their most important numbers in their own database: signups, active users, usage, revenue they compute themselves.

dashboardbase is built for that case. Instead of connectors, you point a widget at an endpoint in your own backend, and the endpoint returns JSON in a fixed shape. dashboardbase renders it; nothing is copied to us. Plans are flat, from $9.99/month, not per dashboard, with a 14-day free trial.

A daily-active-users tile, for example, is just this response:

response.json dashboardbase.com/s/your-company
{
  "title": "Daily active users",
  "actions": [
    {
      "title": "View Details",
      "type": "link",
      "url": "https://example.com/dau-details"
    }
  ],
  "data": {
    "header": {
      "title": "2,543",
      "subtitle": "vs last month",
      "badge": {
        "text": "+12%",
        "icon": "ArrowUp",
        "color": "Success"
      }
    }
  }
}

You can check a response like this in the public endpoint validator before signing up. It renders the widget or names the field that's wrong.

What you get on top: native iOS and Android apps with push notifications when an endpoint raises an alert, and TV pairing by code at www.dashboardbase.com/tv, so no laptop stays logged in on the wall. How TV pairing works.

What you give up: there are no pre-built connectors. If nobody on the team can write a small endpoint, Geckoboard or Databox will serve you better.

FAQ

Is Databox cheaper than Geckoboard? For many dashboards fed by a few sources, usually yes: Databox's paid plans don't charge per dashboard, and it has a free plan.* For one or two dashboards across many tools, Geckoboard's $79 Essentials can come out cheaper.*

Which is better for an office TV? Geckoboard is built around it. Databox supports wall displays too.*

Does Geckoboard have a mobile app? Not a native one any more; it offers a progressive web app.* Databox has native iOS and Android apps.*

Is there a Geckoboard or Databox alternative for developers? If your data is in your own backend, dashboardbase reads it from your endpoints instead of copying it. See our Geckoboard alternatives and Databox alternatives pages for wider comparisons.
