Looker Studio Alternatives for API and App Data (2026)
If your data isn't in Google, the Looker Studio alternatives to look at are Metabase or Apache Superset (for a SQL database), Power BI (for a Microsoft shop), Databox or Geckoboard (for SaaS-tool KPIs), Grafana (for time-series data), and dashboardbase (for numbers that come from your own API or app). Looker Studio is free and very good at Google data; most people leave because their data, or their use case, moved somewhere else.

Why people look past Looker Studio
Looker Studio is free, and Looker Studio Pro is $9 per user per month.* That's hard to beat on price. The reasons to switch are about fit:
- Your data isn't in Google. Google Analytics, Ads, Sheets and BigQuery connect natively. Your own Postgres, your product's API or a payment provider usually mean a third-party connector or exporting to Sheets first.
- You want live numbers. Looker Studio is a reporting tool. It's at its best on yesterday's data, not on a number that should move while you watch it.
- Phones and office TVs. Reports are web pages. There's no native mobile app with push alerts and no dedicated wall-display mode.
- The report is the product, not the dashboard. Great for a monthly client report; less so for a screen the team watches all day.
What to look for
- The data source: a SQL database, SaaS tools, time-series metrics, or your own API.
- Freshness: reporting on yesterday, or watching today.
- Where it's viewed: a browser tab, a phone, or a TV on the wall.
- Who builds it: a marketer, an analyst, or a developer.
The alternatives
1. dashboardbase: live dashboards from your own API
Instead of connectors, each dashboardbase widget calls an endpoint you control and renders the JSON it returns. If your app already has the numbers, a small endpoint is all it takes, and nothing is copied to our side.

}Dashboards refresh on the interval you choose, and when data changes, values count up, charts ease into their new shape and a small "Updated" badge confirms the screen is live.
- Price: flat plans from $9.99/month (3 seats), $29.99 (10 seats), $79.99 (25 seats); 14-day free trial.
- Good at: operational numbers from your own product, native iOS and Android apps with push alerts, and TVs paired by code.
- Not a fit when: your data is in Google Analytics or Ads and you need a marketing report. Stay on Looker Studio for that.
If you already return JSON from your API, you're one step away from a dashboard. Paste a response into the endpoint validator to see it rendered, no account needed.
2. Metabase: free BI for a SQL database
- Price: free and open source if self-hosted; cloud Starter $100/month ($90 annual) with 5 users; Pro $575/month.*
- Good at: dashboards and ad-hoc questions on Postgres, MySQL and most warehouses.
- Not a fit when: you'd rather not give a tool database credentials, or you have no database to point it at. See Metabase alternatives.
3. Apache Superset: open-source BI with a data team
- Price: free and open source, self-hosted.
- Good at: teams with an engineer who'll run it and want more chart control.
- Not a fit when: nobody wants to maintain another service.
4. Power BI: the Microsoft route
- Price: free Desktop app; Pro $14 per user per month, billed yearly.* Desktop is Windows-only.
- Good at: Microsoft 365 organisations with an analyst who owns the model.
- Not a fit when: you want something light, or your team is on Macs. Our Power BI alternatives for small teams page covers that trade-off.
5. Databox and Geckoboard: KPIs from SaaS tools
- Databox: free plan (3 data sources, 1 dashboard), paid from $71/month billed annually, native mobile apps.*
- Geckoboard: $79/month for 2 dashboards, built around the office TV, progressive web app on mobile.*
- Good at: marketing, sales and support KPIs from tools they already connect to.
- Not a fit when: the numbers come from your own product.
6. Grafana: time-series and monitoring
- Price: free and open source self-hosted; Grafana Cloud has a free tier.
- Good at: infrastructure metrics, logs and anything in Prometheus or InfluxDB.
- Not a fit when: the data is business numbers from REST APIs. That's a different job.

A common split
Plenty of teams keep Looker Studio for the monthly marketing report and add a second tool for the numbers they watch daily. That's not a failure to consolidate; they're different jobs. One is a document, the other is a screen.
FAQ
Is Looker Studio free? Yes. Looker Studio Pro is $9 per user per month.*
What's a free Looker Studio alternative? Metabase and Apache Superset are free if you host them.* Databox has a free plan.*
Can Looker Studio show live data from my own API? Not natively; you'd use a third-party connector or move the data into Google first. A tool that reads your endpoint directly, such as dashboardbase, avoids that step.
Which alternative works on a phone? dashboardbase and Databox both have native iOS and Android apps.*
