Power BI Alternatives for Small Technical Teams (2026)
For a small technical team, the Power BI alternatives worth a look are Looker Studio (free, strong on Google data), Metabase and Apache Superset (open source, SQL-first), Databox and Geckoboard (connector-based KPI dashboards), and dashboardbase (dashboards fed by your own API, with native mobile apps). If you're a Microsoft shop with someone who owns the data model, Power BI is probably still the right answer, and this page says so where it matters.
Prices below are list prices as of October 2026.*
Why small teams look past Power BI
Power BI is powerful and, at $14 per user per month for Pro, not expensive on paper.* The friction for small technical teams is usually elsewhere:
- The Desktop app is Windows-only. Reports are built in Power BI Desktop, which doesn't run natively on macOS. Mac-first teams end up on virtual machines or the more limited web editor.
- Sharing costs per person. The Desktop app and a free account are free, but publishing and sharing reports needs Pro ($14/user/month) or Premium Per User ($24/user/month), billed yearly.* Every viewer in a Pro workspace needs a licence too.
- It wants a data model. Power BI rewards someone who'll build and maintain a semantic model in Power Query and DAX. A three-person startup rarely has that person.
- It's built for analysis, not a wall. Exploring data is the strength; a live number on a phone or an office TV is not.
What to look for instead
- Where the data lives: SaaS tools, a SQL database, Google, or your own API.
- Who builds the dashboards: an analyst, a developer, or anyone.
- The OS your team uses. It sounds trivial until half the team can't open the editor.
- How it's consumed: exploratory reports, or fixed numbers on phones and screens.
The alternatives
1. dashboardbase: dashboards from your own API
If your numbers come from your own product, dashboardbase skips the data model entirely. Each widget calls an endpoint in your backend that returns JSON in a fixed shape; dashboardbase renders it. Nothing is copied to our side, and there's nothing to install on anyone's laptop.

- Price: flat plans from $9.99/month (3 seats), $29.99 (10 seats), $79.99 (25 seats); 14-day free trial. Every plan has every feature.
- Good at: fixed dashboards, native iOS and Android apps with push alerts, and office TVs paired by code. Works the same on Mac, Windows and Linux because it's a web app.
- Not a fit when: analysts need slicing, drill-downs and ad-hoc questions. That's what Power BI is for.
Check a response in the public endpoint validator without an account, or let the free Skill write the endpoint with Claude Code or Cursor.
2. Looker Studio: free, browser-based, Google-friendly
- Price: free; Looker Studio Pro is $9 per user per month.*
- Good at: shareable reports on Google Analytics, Google Ads, Sheets and BigQuery. Runs in any browser, so Mac teams are fine.
- Not a fit when: data lives outside Google and you don't want third-party connectors, or you need a real data model. See Looker Studio alternatives.
3. Metabase: open source, SQL-first
- Price: free and open source if self-hosted; cloud Starter $100/month ($90 annual) with 5 users; Pro $575/month.*
- Good at: a team with a SQL database that wants a friendly query builder and dashboards in the browser.
- Not a fit when: you'd rather not give a tool database credentials. Our Metabase alternatives page covers that trade-off.
4. Apache Superset: open-source BI with more chart control
- Price: free and open source, self-hosted.
- Good at: teams with a data engineer who want a capable, free BI layer.
- Not a fit when: nobody wants to run and upgrade it.
5. Databox: KPI dashboards from SaaS connectors
- Price: free plan (3 data sources, 1 dashboard); paid from $71/month billed annually.* Native iOS and Android apps.*
- Good at: marketing and sales KPIs from tools like HubSpot and Google Analytics, with goals.
- Not a fit when: your data is in your own product, or you want the analysis depth of Power BI. See Databox alternatives.
6. Geckoboard: a simple KPI TV
- Price: $79/month for 2 dashboards; Performance $319/month.* 14-day trial.
- Good at: a tidy office TV for a non-technical team.
- Not a fit when: you want many dashboards (each costs $24 on Essentials) or analysis of any depth.* See Geckoboard alternatives.

Where Power BI still wins
- You're on Microsoft 365 already and want reports inside Teams and SharePoint.
- An analyst will own the model and answer new questions every week.
- You need row-level security, complex DAX measures or enterprise governance.
None of the tools above beat it on all three.
How to choose
- Data in Google, budget zero: Looker Studio.
- Data in a SQL database, team comfortable with SQL: Metabase or Superset.
- Data in SaaS tools, non-technical owners: Databox or Geckoboard.
- Data behind your own API, developers in charge: dashboardbase.
FAQ
Is there a free alternative to Power BI? Looker Studio is free, and Metabase and Apache Superset are free if you host them.* Power BI Desktop is also free, but sharing needs Pro.*
What's a good Power BI alternative for Mac? Any browser-based tool: Looker Studio, Metabase, Superset, Databox, Geckoboard or dashboardbase. Power BI Desktop itself is Windows-only.
How much does Power BI cost? Pro is $14 per user per month and Premium Per User $24, both billed yearly; the Desktop app and a free account cost nothing.*
Is Power BI overkill for a startup? Often, if what you want is a handful of live numbers rather than analysis. Our build vs buy framework is a useful sanity check.
